Nideggen is a town Nideggen is a town in the district of Düren in the state of North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. It lies on a hilltop immediately above the middle Rur Valley, on the edge of the Eifel National Park in the Rur-Eifel area. The Nideggen old town consists of lovely timber framed and sandstone houses. From the main market place, one looks out over the two defensive city gates. From there, a ten minute walk past the Romanesque parish church with one of the oldest preserved frescoes Germany, will bring you to the Nideggen castle gates, an construction of massive proportions. A number of hiking trails open up around the huge rock formations, upon which the distant castle is built on.

One evening every year, the whole village community organises and celebrates a harvest festival.

Schmidt is the only township in Düren to have a public beach on the Rur lake. This is found in Eschauel, below Schmidt. In the forests and meadow enclosures of the Schmidt Wildlife Park, you can see deer, fallow deer, wild boar, mouflon sheep and llamas.

The ‘Düsterkreuz’ or Dark Cross is one of the only fire brigade monuments in Germany.
