Maria Laach
Abbey and Lake
The Maria Laach Abbey (in latin: Abbatia Mariae Lacensis oder Abbatia Mariae ad Lacum) is a Benedictine abbey located on the southwestern shore of Lake Laach, 4 kilometres north of Mendig in the Eifel region.
The six-towered abbey church, the Laach Cathedral, is a vaulted doomed basilica with a glorious west entrance, the so-called “paradise” (which is the only one of its kind north of the Alps), and the 13th century cloister, which was restored in 1859. It is considered one of the most beautiful monuments of Romanesque architecture from the age of the Salian dynasty in Germany. In 1926, Pope Pius XI bestowed the honorary title “Basilica Minor” upon the cathedral.
The abbey belonged to the Benedictine Order. In their possession was also the so-called “Abbey Manor”, agricultural land that is now leased to an organic farm and its associated health food shop, the Laacher Lake with its tourist facilities (including a camping ground, and facilities for boat rentals and fishing), the renowned Lake Hotel, a large nursery, an art publishing house, a bookshop, as well as various artisan operations (for example a bronze foundry, ironwork, pottery, carpentry, and electrical workshop). So there are plenty of opportunities to shop according to your individual tastes and interests, in addition to enjoying the nature and culture of the local region.
