Brühl / Rhineland
Palaces, Max-Ernst-Museum & Phantasialand
A visit to the Augustusburg und Falkenlust Palaces and the Max-Ernst-Museum in Brühl is essential – whether you’re travelling from Cologne with clients in your chauffeur-driven limousine, or whether you duck off between meetings.
The Augustusburg Palace is connected to the Falkenlust hunting lodge by an avenue that cuts through the picturesque palace garden. These palaces are the most famous Baroque and Rococo buildings in Germany, and are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Here you can see a high altar designed by Balthasar Neumann, and a beautiful palace garden reminiscent of Versailles. The Augustusburg Palace was extensively restored to repair war damage, and from 1949 to 1996 it was an ostentatious estate used by the German President and German government to receive state guests.
Since 2001, the management of the Brühl palaces regularly offers additional themed and guided sightseeing tours. The Augustusburg Palace, the palace church and the palace gardens are also venues for the Brühl Palace Concert series.
Phantasialand opened in 1967 in a former mountain troll pit, in the coal mining area of the Ville, and is one of the oldest amusement parks in Europe. In March 2013, it received the "theme park with the best attractions” award from the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
